Unmanned Frigates For ASW. What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

Yup.. DARPA is pursuing the idea of developing unmanned frigates for use in ASW. I understand DARPA has "Top Men" working on things, but I think perhaps they might want to take a few days off. Have some drinks. Lay on the beach. Get away from it all.

The vessels, dubbed Anti-Submarine Warfare Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessels
or ACTUVs, are designed to be unmanned, with only intermittent
communication from operators on shore or on a ship, and to require no
maintenance for months. They will also obey navigational rules and be
able to avoid collisions at sea.

Uh huh……….  Seems SkyNet may have a cousin named SeaNet.  Sigh…..

If not completely unmanned, couldn't you stick an OS3 aboard with some maneuvering boards, etc.?

Heh.. of course, provided he has a large stack of Cokes, Cheetohs, and a way to download WoW… 🙂 I guess it'd be a lot like Bruce Dern's character in "Silent Running".

But Tim, no worries about DADT or pregnant sailors.

Sit back, relax, enjoy your automated flight. Nothing can go wro*hick*… Nothing can go wro*hick*… Nothing can go wro*hick*…

    Teah… as long as they don't put a HAL 9000 in charge. "I'm sorry, Admiral… I can't do that… "

"Hal, Alpha Whiskey is calling, please answer".

Remember back in the 90's, when YORKTOWN recieved a Microsoft program for running the ship with minimal crewing, and YORKTOWN shut herself off? With these unmanned frigates, you could lose the whole escort of a convoy, either to computer glitches, or even a very bad thunderstorm giving enough lightning strikes.
How would one keep people who don't belong on board, off side? Someone willing to lose a few of the swarm of boats sent out, could board one of those, and all of her secrets would be thiers. Even with self destructs, they might not work on all the materials. This is a very bad idea. If for no other reason than they stilll don't make a computer as wiley as a SS CO.
I probably won't be allowed back on Salamander's site for saying this, but better an LCS than this idea.

I remember the Yorktown fiasco. That's just what you need, too, you know? Bogies inbound hot and all of a sudden the tac screens go blue with a windows error message on them. Heh…..

Looking at the photo above of the FREEDOM, I see that there is more than enough room for a 5 incher up front. There is even enough room for a short O-1 deck, and a second, superfiring 5 incher, like a FLETCHER. The silly thing wieghs more than a FLETCHER, it deserves better than a 57MM Anti Seagull Artillery gun. There is even room to the rear of the deckhouse for a 40mm at either side, to cover her 6, and beams as anti fast boat guns, you know, the sort of things you find in the littorals?
