AW1 Tim is a former Aviation Anti-Submarine Warfare Operator 1sts Class (E-6). That’s a fancy title and means that I operated the sensor equipment aboard P-3 Orion aircraft for the US Navy. Those sensors included sonar, radar, ESM, MAD, camera, FLIR and such systems. My job was to take the data that the system collected, analyze it, and pass it on to the Tactical Coordinator for his use. I have ~5000 hours of aircrew time and loved every minute of it. I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat.
In this blog I talk about my job, about ASW, about submarines and ships, both ours and other nations, about politics and anything else that I want to write about. It’s my front porch, and you’re all welcome to have a seat and speak your mind.

Tim — Nice Orion pieces. I’m developing an exhibit at Maine Maritime Museum called Cold Waters, Cold War: the 20th Century Navy in Maine, about US naval personnel and operations based in Maine during the Cold War era. This will run Feb.18, 2011 – August 7, 2011, and will be largely devoted to submarine-related operations in the North Atlantic, with regional tie-ins to the P-3 Orion squadrons out of Naval Air Station Brunswick, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, and the acoustic sensing and communications centers at Cutler and Winter Harbor farther Downeast.
I’m hoping you could help me locate ASW material to support this exhibit, possibly like the charts you have mentioned in some commentary replies.
At any rate, please feel free to contact me when convenient M-F 8-5.
Much obliged,
Chris

Tim-
As a reader of your blog, I know how important the veterans community is to you. I’d like to ask your help in supporting a DoD/VA/DOL initiative for veterans and caregivers, the National Resource Directory (nrd.gov). The NRD is a non-partisan effort that has the direct support of Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (see attached letter).
As you know, our Wounded Warriors, Service Members, Veterans, family members and caregivers are facing great difficulties in getting timely and trustworthy information regarding available benefits and services. In response to this crisis, the Departments of Defense, Veterans Affairs and Labor have created the National Resource Directory. The NRD has over 13,000 pre-screened resources for Wounded Warriors, Service Members, Veterans, family members, caregivers, and those who support them.
A large part of this effort is to publicize this initiative among the veterans community and I think your site could help us accomplish this goal. While we would appreciate any mention of the NRD on your site, we would like to ask you if you would put one of our widgets on your site. Our widgets are links to local resources within your respective state that can help those in your area (or any area) find the local resources they need. The widgets take about five minutes to install. They can be found here: https://www.nationalresourcedirectory.gov/stateWidget/index.
Thanks,
James McCarty
